Can I dye over my red hair?

I have asked a question about my hair earlier. I had turned my roots orange dying over my natural ash brown roots, and then the rest of the hair green hues becuase of the high lights I had. Then I tried a medium brown which didn't do anything. So I decided to listen to you guys and get it fixed proffesionally, only to have it even worse. I asked the lady to fix my hair and dye it to a color that matches my natural color and to get rid of any of this current colors. Well she did...but now she made my hair a red. The roots are a bright red, while the rest of the hair is a dark red. Can I dye over my red color with a really dark brown all over? Will this get rid of the red and make my hair just dark brown? I know I will wait a week or so before doing this. And should I use a permanent or a semi permament. Please help, I don't understand in the coloring much, and can't waste much more money on a proffesional.
